Recycled Type 1 and 6F4 Aggregates available now from certified stocks.

The West Somerset Railway is now able to supply environmentally sourced and sustainable recycled aggregates. In association with John Luffman Trading, the Charity has achieved Certification for a number of common product grades and is making this available to the West Somerset/Devon and South West market as a good local source of environmentally produced aggregate.

The aggregate produced to WRAP guidelines is certified free of contamination and has been cleared by the Environment Agency for use on the local flood plain and thus in a water course where required.

Full size copies of certification are available on request

Quality assured recycled aggregates are free of aggregate tax levy and are increasingly sought to increase the sustainable content of new build projects. The lower economic cost and good public relations value of using recycled products is becoming increasingly attractive over the penalties associated with freshly quarried stocks.

The West Somerset Railway Association is a registered charity. As a small group of volunteers they support the West Somerset Railway who operate restored steam trains from Bishops Lydeard near Taunton to the seaside at Minehead.

When the group wanted to turn their locomotives and land became available near Taunton they sought and obtained permission to build a new triangle for the purpose.

Details of our project and progress can be seen at www.wsr.org.uk/norton.htm
The project is receiving clean inert spent railway ballast direct from Network Rail which is undertaking a two year programme of refurbishment in the West Country.

As a sensitive site constructed on a flood plain the Association needed to be sure the material it receives is entirely free of contamination and is from consistent stocks. This certainty has been established by testing using accredited third parties which has established over time that the material arriving at site is clean and of consistent quality.

The ballast is predominantly granite with some limestone and is thus stable and inert. It is recovered by automatic plant from plain railway in open country and thus remote from stations and yards where there is a possibility of contamination over time.

The Association’s own site is on the Tone flood plain where the material is used to form the base of the banks required for the triangle and to subsequently top them with ballast for the Association’s own lines. It is therefore subject to close scrutiny by the approval Authorities. The site has been honoured with a Merit Award by the Institution of Civil Engineers which recognises construction projects within the South West area of particular merit, physical achievement, innovation or ingenuity which promotes the excellence of the engineering profession.
