The Association produces a high quality quarterly magazine - the West Somerset Railway Journal - which is sent free to Association members, and is also available for purchase at the Railway’s principal retail outlets at Bishops Lydeard and Minehead.
The WSR Journal first appeared in 1978 and replaced the WSRA Newsletter, which had previously served the primary purpose of keeping Association members informed of news, events and developments from the line. The magazine is published four times a year, and has developed over the years into a very high quality publication - containing feature articles, news items (about the stations, engines, rolling stock, signalling, permanent way, special events etc), letters, information and many photographs (both colour and black & white).
Since 1978, there have been six editors:
|
| » Allan Stanistreet (January 1978 - April 1980)
| » Peter Cook (July 1980 - January 1981)
| » Graham Stagg (July 1981 - Spring 1990)
| » Peter Barnfield (Summer 1990 - Autumn 1990)
| » Richard Jones (Winter 1990-91 - Autumn 1995)
| » David Williams (Winter 1995-96 to date)
|
In recent years, the WSR Journal has received several awards and been highly commended on a number of occasions. Issue No 77 was awarded the D. Noel Draycott Trophy for continued excellence in the 1997 AIRPS Publications Competition. Further success and recognition came in 2001 with the WSR Journal winning first place in the Heritage Railways Association bi-annual competition for ‘house’ magazines from groups having more than 500 members; winning again in 2003 and 2005.
