West Somerset Restoration
Restoring heritage locomotives, carriages and wagons

West Somerset Restoration is managed by WSRA (Promotions)Ltd, the trading arm of the West Somerset Railway Association (WSRA), and is based in the Swindon Shed, a Grade II Listed building at Williton Station on the West Somerset Railway (WSR). The Swindon Shed was originally situated on the site of the Swindon Railway Works before it was moved to Williton in 1991.
West Somerset Restoration's primary objective is to restore and preserve the West Somerset Railway's locomotives and rolling stock. The workshop provides a heavy engineering facility as part of the railway's overall engineering strategy. West Somerset Restoration supports apprenticeships to help keep heritage railway skills alive and an ongoing programme of training and support for all staff is in place.
Services offered include full overhaul and repainting of carriages and wagons.
We have facilities for machining bearing re-casting, white metaling, welding and fabrication, turning, milling, surface grinding, slotting, boring and general boiler repairs. Full locomotive overhauls are offered.
The WSRA moved into the Swindon Shed from Minehead in 1995, since when the engineering team has completed the overhaul of WSRA locomotive No 6412 and Private owner Locomotives No 34046, No 6960 and Chassis overhaul of 6695.
Although our core activities are railway based, numerous commercial engineering tasks have been completed for a number of non-railway customers, including the overhaul of traction engine boilers. The team at Williton is keeping traditional engineering alive and flourishing in Somerset and will also undertake a wide range of fabrication tasks for one off or small batch production.
