Trackers is the name of the WSR Youth Section. The Association seeks to encourage young people to join in the work and activities of the West Somerset Railway (WSR). The principal aim of our youth policy is to support young people by providing a safe but interesting and challenging environment in which to learn about the work involved in restoring and maintaining a part of the country's railway heritage. It is very important that young people’s interest in railways are nurtured and encouraged, as they will be the source of all the volunteers in the future. It is also our intention to promote and actively market the WSR as a centre of educational excellence, and to provide a valuable resource for schools and other academic institutions enabling them to carry out visits, field investigations or projects. Between 13 years and 16 years of age young people can become involved in a comprehensive range of volunteer activities. These activities can be independent of their parents or guardian, but must have full written consent of the parent/guardian. As a member of this volunteer group all young people will be fully covered by the WSR plc's insurance policy. Members of Trackers have the opportunity to see and experience the work of the WSR first hand. With the support of adult staff they will be able to try their skills at some of the various railway activities. Once the age of 16 years is attained young volunteers can continue with the WSR as part of the adult volunteer team. Trackers are issued with a special WSR Staff Identity Card. Trackers must also be a member of the WSRA (either in their own right or as part of a family membership). In addition to working on the railway itself on specific activities, Trackers are able to take part in the full programme of Working and Rostered Duty Days, Special Working Days, Training days and Visits arranged for 2004. Details of these activities are outlined in regular Newsletters, which is also full of news, views and reports of their activities. If you would like to become a member of Trackers simply complete the application form and forward it to the address shown. You will be welcomed into a fast increasing group of young people with whom you will share and develop a mutual interest. With the help of the Trackers team the West Somerset Railway will grow and flourish for future generations. Come and join us...a warm welcome is assured...we're miles better!
