WSR Locomotive Restoration Project
Supporting Steam Locomotives on the West Somerset Railway
The West Somerset Railway Locomotive Restoration Project supports the long term security of locomotives operating on the West Somerset Railway. The project is primarily concerned with the restoration of three ex GWR locomotives of complimentary sizes - Large Prairie 4110,owned by the WSR plc, and two locomotives owned by the WSRA, Small Prairie 4561 and Manor Class 7821 "Ditcheat Manor".
Small Prairie 4561 is the first priority of the fund, and restoration is already underway. The bulk of the work is being done at our WS Restoration works at Williton, by a team of staff, volunteers and apprentices. The aim is to complete the restoration and return 4561 to traffic by 2021, to fit the requirements of the WSR PLC's locomotive policy for the railway. The Vice-Chairman, Mike Sherwood, presented a Locomotive Restoration Strategy for 4561 at the 2017 AGM.
Restoration of Large Prairie 4110 was planned to be undertaken by volunteers at Minehead, but the locomotive was sold off the railway in January 2019 and is therefore no longer part of the Locomotive Restoration Fund and project.
Ditcheat Manor 7821, will remain on display at the McArthurGlen outlet centre in Swindon until further notice.
The WSR Locomotive Restoration Fund now supports two locomotives (4561 and 7821).
